Playlist for 5-14-10, featuring Robert Gilligan's 1987 album "Dark Rooms"

Last week's album was a very split-second decision, as I heard the record and literally decided to play it later that same day. I know next to nothing about this guy or his life, which is also strange for the program because I try to do research on each album I bring out.

Basically, what I know is that Robert Gilligan was half English, half Austrian, and that he played, recorded and wrote this album completely by himself shortly before killing himself. The music included on his album is kind of folk-rock, maybe like a really sloppy Neil Young or the Kenneth Higney tracks I played a while back. All the words, however, are about how being born is a curse, how everything sucks, and why we should all die (basically). This creates a very odd mood because the music isn't all that dark and depressing; just the words.

Here's pretty much the only review I can find of this record:

"Amazing Tortured Downer Folk Psych with a psych edge and Nick Drake influences. Crying for help atmosphere, paranoid lyrics, sparse guitar and drums backing.. Sadly Robert committed suicide shortly after this was released. One of the most intense Downer Folk Lp's out there" - Jellyfishrecords.com

As I said before, the rest of the program's music was pretty much just me cleaning house and getting rid of some of these tracks I've had on disc for way too long.

I think that this week's non-Obscuro! download will be some of my own stuff...a few people wanted the recordings of a particular group I was in, and we never really even got this shit out of the basement at the time, so I might as well. I'll throw together a little download-able file in a day or so.

Tracklist for the Robert Gilligan album:

1. On a Shelf
2. A Poet Dies
3. Sell Your Presence
4. The Mourners
5. The Trip
